Lithium-ion batteries are now used extensively across industry, but major safety concerns surround battery storage, quarantine procedures, the transport and disposal of damaged batteries, and thermal runaway.
During thermal runaway, the high heat created by a failing cell can affect neighbouring cells, causing them to also become thermally unstable. A battery pack can be destroyed within minutes or an incident can continue for hours as individual cells enter thermal runaway. An irreversible thermal event in a lithium-ion battery can be initiated in several ways, including an internal or external short circuit, overcharging, external heating, fire or mechanical abuse.
During thermal runaway, gases including hydrogen fluoride (HF), phosphorus pentafluoride (PF5) and phosphoryl fluoride (POF3) may be released. Studies have also examined the potential formation of HF during fire suppression involving water.
